About No Excuse Club
My name is Ron and I used to be very physically fit…an avid ‘gym rat’ with several gym memberships, including my personal home gym, Golden Gloves boxer, league/tournament racquetball player and always up for a physical challenge. In 1993 (at the age of 25), I began having bouts of extreme dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. I was in the prime of my life and was in-the-midst of my biggest challenge. I was eventually diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1997.
My wife and I met in college in 1992. We started a tanning salon on the edge of SCSU campus called Captain Ron’s. We were managing a party-boat operation at a the Pirate’s Cove supper club until it burned down.
Captain Ron’s, inc. eventually expanded. We had a spring break travel division, bought a hair salon on campus and opened two successful cellphone stores.
My Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was running rampant. I started working full time at Slumberland so we had medical benefits. I was one of the top salespeople nationwide in my second year. I got awards for being a top salesperson in several categories and won a Caribbean cruise for my wife and myself. I was within the top seven paid salespeople out of 600+. I was on fire and in great shape. I decided to sell part-time at Slumberland on some weekends and big events, so I could sell bigger ticket items. I eventually became a realtor and mortgage broker. My intention was to become a real estate broker and open my own realty company.
Captain Ron’s, inc. had a spring break travel division, a multi-car limousine service, a hair salon on campus.
Our lives began to change dramatically as my MS progressed. My speech became slurred. I had vertigo constantly, needed an eye patch to ease my double vision, became dependent on a wheel chair by 2005 and was exhausted most of the time. I let my realtor license expire and we began selling/closing the businesses that we spent years building and left our large dream house for one with fewer stairs where I could stay on one level. I was 182 pounds. My MS doctor said I should get my weight down to 160-165. I was at my weakest point ever and didn’t have much muscle tone.
I started using my manual wheelchair for cardiovascular exercise (starting with going to the nearest neighbor’s driveway and back) working with two-three pound dumbbells and changed my diet. I was 132 pounds with 7.2% bodyfat two years later. I told my wife that I wanted to become an ACE-certified Personal Trainer to help others with physical challenges. She said, “That makes perfect sense!” And here we are. I feel that I need to help others with their fitness and health since I had such a miraculous change. I have been helping others get and stay healthy
